This is why the RAD or Relegalize All Drugs initiates forbid the government from taxing or regulating marijuana or any other drug.

When the Federal government made marijuana and other drugs illegal they knew it would be unconstitutional per the 10th Amendment to make the drugs illegal so they passed tax laws that places outrageous taxes on the drugs, which effectively made the drugs illegal.

That's why those two laws had the words "tax act" in their titles.

They were the:

1914 Harrison Narcotic Tax Act

and the

1937 Marihuana Tax Act

In this issued of Time Magazine called "Marijuana Goes Main Street" they explain that in this article.
"When the Harrison Act was enacted in 1914, most Constitutional scholars believed that states alone had the power to regulate medicine including prescriptions. Congress couldn't meddle with doctors, but it could impose taxes. So the Harrison Act was technically a tax act, even though it's intent was to regulate narcotics. The act squeaked pass a 1919 Supreme Court review, 5-4, because it was cloaked as a tax law, not drug regulation

...

That's why Congress outlawed marijuana with a tax act

...

The Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 ... nicked registered cannabis handlers $1 an ounce for each transaction. Unregistered handlers were taxed $100 an ounce. To put this in context in 1936, you could drive a brand-new Studebaker for $650."

I did a quick Google and a 2015 Ford F-150 starts at $26,330.

If we use that number to get the cost of that $1 tax and $100 tax in 2015 numbers the $1 an ounce marijuana tax would be $40 and the $100 an ounce tax would be $4,000 and ounce.

Good old Timothy Leary got both of these laws declared unconstitutional in 1968 and they were replaced with a new Federal drug law, which is probably just as unconstitutional.

Feds use taxes to make machine guns illegal

This isn't the first time the Federal government has used tax acts to make things illegal which the government isn't allowed to make illegal.

The Fed's used taxes to flush the 2nd Amendment down the toilet and make machine guns illegal.

In the "National Firearms Act of 1934" the Federal government slapped a $200 tax on machine guns to effectively make them illegal.

At the time you could buy a machine gun for $10 from the Sears and Roebuck catalog. So the $200 tax was 20 times the $10 cost of a machine gun.

Those "tommy guns" gangsters used were the expensive machine guns of the era. They cost $50 each compared to the $10 generic machine guns. So the $200 tax on tommy guns was 4 times the $50 cost of a tommy gun.

Kyrsten Sinema tries to kill medical marijuana with taxes?

Kyrsten Sinema tries to repeal medical marijuana with taxes?

Here in Arizona we had US Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema attempt to flush Prop 203 or Arizona's Medical Marijuana Act down the toilet with taxes.

US Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema attempted to do this when she was a member of the Arizona legislator, not in her current job as a member of the US Congress.

Kyrsten Sinema wrote a bill that would have slapped at 300 percent tax on medical marijuana.

That 300% tax on medical marijuana would have been a $900 an ounce on medical marijuana which currently sells for $300 at medical marijuana dispensaries in Arizona.

The tax would have increased the cost of an ounce of medical marijuana from $300 an ounce to $1,200 an ounce. The tax would have bankrupted many sick medical marijuana patients.

Those patients would have had to choose between being bankrupted or getting their medical marijuana on the black market and risking going to prison.
